3. Flying conditions were very much better in the Danube lowlands than in the Siret-
Prut area. The prevailing winds in Rumania were east to west and the Danube
lowlands were rapidly cleared from an overcast. In the Siret-Prot area, the hills
and the valleys ran from north to south, trapping the clouds and tending to
localize many of the overcasts. During the winter in the Danube lowlands, there
were few fogs but many severe west winds and extreme cold. The prevailing winds
,during the winter were from 18 to 20 kph, east to west.
