1. The Chinese Nationalists have moved out of the central and northern Wa States, but
remain in Pang Yang (N 22-08, E 98-17),the capital of Manglun State.
2. The Chinese Communists are attacking the Wa tribes in the northeast Wa States.'
An observation post is based at Maw Noi, two days march north of Meng Lien(N 22-0,E 99 36),
Attacks are made through Mong Hka (N 22-45, E 99-25) into the area to the west.
3. All road building in the Lan Tsang hsien has been stopped due to the rains.3
4. A force of 200 Lahu who have resisted the Chinese Communists for 3 years in the
area north of Meng Se (N 21-59, E 100-15) have crossed the border and joined the
Chinese Nationalists at ]dung Yawng (N'21-.10, E 100-21). Several other complete
villages of Lallu have crossed from Yunnan and are now camped In the Mong Pawk ( N 22-00,
E 99-20) area.
5. There were no clashes during 1-15 June between Burmese and Chinese rationalist forces
in Kengtung State, but minor skirmishes occurred in Mong Pan State.
25X1 A 1. I Comment. This area is within Yunnan.
25X1 A 2. Comment. This area is one of the wildest in the Wa States. A campaign,
wring the rainy season, may be significant in terms of the previously reported
plan of the Chinese Communists to set up an autonomous nationalist state of all
Shan tribes and may represent a Chinese Communist attempt to subdue the more
recalcitrant of the Wa tribes who have never submitted to outside authority.
25X1A
25X1A 4. Comment. Such a migration during the rainy season is Most unusual and
indicates extreme dissatisfaction with the Chinese Communists.
