(FOR KEY SEE REVERSE) SOURFE e Source never saw, heard of, or ha~ any evidence of. a lead sulfide cell's having been produced at Zavod 393. In the laboratory of Dr. Goerlich, source saw what'he took for several lead sulfide cells in various stages of construction. He emphasized that.theee were experimental cells, if they were'PbS'cell's. They were double walled glass containers about 12 to 14 em long." The inner tube.'was about 2 cm in diameter, while the outer one'was"3'to 3.5' cm in diameter.., There was a Dewar seal at one and. An electrical conducting strip was painted along either the inner or outer wall of the inside tube, ending'at an electrical lead at what source assumes was; to be the upper end There'was a second electrical lead at this end`, but source does not recall how it was connected or the exact location. The lower end, or flat surface, of the'outer tube was opaque with a'square, clear window about'10 mm on'a side. The lower and of the inner-'tube'was coated with a substance which source says was PbS. He drleernnot owSwhether the PbS was on, the inside or outside of the ., . hat'Dr. Gobirlich was working on 'experimental odisc iwith"persons'in Goerlich's group. These tubes PbS weretproceesd by discussions unevacuated state in an extremely them In an p y F' primitive fashion.' They were placed on an asbestos pad and surrounded with an aebestos'eylinder containing a`heating element. They were baked at 650? for 20 minutes. These were experimental cells and not production cells. Source never saw a completed cell and cannot say'whether either a #'bS experimental or production cell ever was completed. 25X1 25X1X Approved For Release 2002/07/15 : CIA-RDP80-0081OA001700230005-3 25X1A 13 July 1953 1.
