stages of their occupation of Yunnan. The Chinese Communists have now won their
friendship by helping clean their villages, ploughing their fields, carrying water
and firewood, and teaching them to care for their domestic animals,
5. Under the Chinese Nationalist regime, there was no dispensary at Mengmao (N 21-.02,
E 97-52) or in other locations near the Burma border. The Chinese Communists haves
set up. dispensaries in this vicinity and have also established maternity. hospitals,
kindly disposed toward their Chinese Communist governors than previously, This has
resulted, in large measure, from assistance rendered by the Chinese soldiers in the
working of the farms and in the general attitude of humility which they have displayed
toward the people in the area. ` ` .
Before the Chinese Communist occupation, the Sawbwas received one-fifth of the rice
crop yield axiriually. This tribute is no longer exacted, and novr all of the rice crop
is sold directly to the Chinese Communist Government. If the crop fails in any year,
the Chinese Communist Government will supply the farmers with free paddy and no
taxes are charged for that year.
omment. The Chinese Communists have been so successful in their propaganda
campaign that it would now prove very difficult to get the people in these areas to
turn ,against the Chinese Communist Government.
