In the autumn of 1952 the Chinese Communists began the second phase of construction of the Chingehou (N 3b-18, E 112-13) North Hupeh flood control project. The project included a 120 kilometer drainage canal, the repair Of dikes which were close to tie floodgate entrances, and the repair and reinforcement of the floodgates which were built in 1951. 2. At the junction (N 33-05, E 118-4$) of Hungtse Hu and the Senho, the Chinese Communists were constructing a large floodgate 700 meters long with 75 gates. The floodgate, which was designed by Russians, would be used to control the, whole Hungtee Hu. It was being constructed of steel girders, rocks, and cement and would be controlled by electricity when it was completed. There were 50,000 laborers working on the floodgate, and it was scheduled for completion in June 1953. In the autumn of 1952 the Chinese Communists were planning two other flood- gates.pro,jects which were as follows: ' a. A 40-meter long floodgate with five rtes at Ch'engtun Hu (N 32-12) E 116-24), the lake east of Hoch'iu (32-22, E 116-18). b. A 160-Inter long floodgate with 13 gates at Wangchiapa (N 30-28, E 115-40). 4. The Chinese Communists had planned to construct six reservoirs for irrigation in the mdi4 tain areas of Anhwei and Honan by the end of 1952
