On 9 July 1953, before his departure for the Communist-sponsored International Teachers' Conference in East Berlin, 21 - 2L July, Cesar GODOY Urrutia, Com- munist leader and Secretary for Intellectual Matters of the Chilean Communist Party (PCChy, was given a testimonial dinner at'the headquarters of the Union de Profesores de Chile. In response to laudatory speeches, GODOY thanked his friends for the dinner and for the funds collected to defray his expenses, which he stated would enable him to travel in a much better state than he had on past occasions. It was announced that a petition had been presented to the Minister of Education to reinstate GODOY to his official status of a professor and that it was expected that by the time of his return to Chile this petition would have been favorably acted upon. 2. It was further announced at this dinner that Maria MARCHANT Riquelme, who is now in Europe,, would attend the above-mentioned teachers' congress as a member of the Chilean delegation. A number of teachers had wanted to attend the Berlin congress but lacked sufficient funds to go to Europe. It was stated, however, that plans were under way to arrange for a large number of Chilean teachers to attend the Sixth American Teachers' Congress, to be held in. Jan- uary 19KL_ 3. 25X1 1. Comment.
