instructed to report to the Regional Induction Commies on (Rejonowa
Komenda Uzupelnien -- RKU) at Gliwice (Gleiwitz) L5-1g4OJ within three
days. When the inductees reported to the RKU, they were examined by a
medical examining board (Komieja Lekareka), Consisting of one medical of-
ficer (rank unknown) and two or throe enlisted medical aides (grades un-
known). The medical examination was a cursory check-up of the head, chest,
and feet. Blood tests or urinalyses were not given. After the examination
the inductees r instructed to return home and &wait further orders, t

When the inductees reported to the RKU for the first time,
they were required to fill out a questionnaire, which included the

villages and towns :n le vicinity of Gliwice. The men in this group
belonged to the class of 1926. Three men were deferred because they
were in the third year of high school, and several men were deferred
because their parents were elderly people and dependent on them for
support. This entire group spent the night at the RKU. On the fol-
7owing day each man was given a total of 100 zloty. They entrained
for Lublin, j115N-2200 together with about 50 additional inductees.
At Lublin the men were divided into various groups and assigned to
different units in the 3rd WOP Brigade. Background screening to
determine the political reliability of the inductees was conducted
after they were assigned to specific units; questions relative to per-
sonal and parental background were particularly stressed during the
screening period.
2. In September 1947 group of inductees filling out question-
naires at the R Gliwice, This group was Plated for assignment to the
KEW or the WOP. only politically reliable men were
accepted for service ? haw an WOP. About 80% of the men selected
for the KBW and WOP carne from the peasant and labor classes, and they
usually had lose than a seventh-grade education. The KBW and WOP were
referred to as the worker or peamo.nt unite. The KBW was responsible for
the training of KBW and WOP recx bout O% of the recruits were re-
leaged by the KBW to WOP units.'~ I

the 1927 class, An unknown number of the 1928 and 1929 classes were

4.. The length of service for privates and N001 in 1 for both the KBW and
WOP was two years. However, that name year rumors that the
tour of duty would be extended to 27 months.
