The Administration is responsible for the collection' of scrap material,$ such as wool, cotton wool., paper, leather, glass, and metals The scrap material is collected in numerous depots throughout the country, either purchased from retailers or obtained from agents attached to in- dustrial enterprises. 2. In large tons, the scrap material is sorted at central depots. The largest depot in Sofia occupies the buildings of a former sugar factory. Scrap metal is carefully sorted into usable industrial iron ("U," and "V" angle irons), iron for melting down, machine parts, and non-ferrous. metals. 3. Metal parts in good condition are sold to commercial and industrial enterprises. Scrap iron is sent to foundries, particularly to the establishment at Pernik (now Di itrovo) which produces round iron bars for concrete reinforcement and flat iron bars; this factory has a coke-burning blast furnace. Non-ferrous scrap, mainly brass, bronze, and copper, as well as aluminum, is sent to the Metal Factory (for- merly Mepro Factory) which is located about 500 meters south of the Iskur rail- road station southeast of Sofia. These metal factories include the former Valpro enterprise, which is now the only factory in Bulgaria which mints coins. The Metal Factory., which employs 300 to 400 workers, produces pipes, sheet metal, angle iron., faucets, and cartridge cases. Most of the lead scrap is sent to the foundry formerly owned by Tamborez (fnu) at Kurilo-,cnorth of Sofia, where both lead ore and scrap lead are processed and made into pipes. 4.
