By means of the "Vezhen" Zastava, the "Ruen" Zastava is connected with 1 Avren "Bozhur" Zastava. Through the Komandatura in Chorbadzhiysko, "Ruen" Zastava is connected with the military central telephone. The switchboards in Chekalarovo and "Ruen" Zastava are of Bulgarian construction. 11. All the zastavas subordinate to Komandatura 4562, are located about 150-200 meters south of Chorbadzhiysko. This Komandatura, together with Komandatura 4563 in Avren, Krumovgrad Okoliya, and Komandatura 4561, Zlatograd, compose the 5 Border Guard Otryad, Podelenie 4560, Momchilgrad. Fortifications of 4 "Ruen" Zastava 12. The first line of trenches begins about 50 meters from the zastava and descends to the Komotini road, running three to four meters east of it. A large part of the trench interior is rock-lined, and in places, there are machine embrasures reinforced with cement. 13. Another line of trenches is located on the west side of the Komotini road and starts almost at the end of the first line of trenches. It runs parallel to the road for an interval, and then bypasses the "General Ginev" mountain. The beginning of the trench line is lined with stones, but no reinforcements exist along the entire remainder of the trench. 14. The third line begins with the second row of trenches, and runs in a zigzag pattern around the north and west of "General Ginev" mountain. It almost connects with the end of the second line, so that there is approximately a full closed circle. of trenches around the mountain. All these trenches were constructed during the summer of 1951, and have a depth of about 1-1.2 meters and a'width of approximately .80 meters. 15. One small trench line is located on the heights above the old customs house, at the intersection of the Krumovgrad, Momchilgrad, and Komotini roads. This trench line runs along a hill known as "Geroya" (Hero), probably in connection with the memorial located there. 16. There are trenches around Lozentsi (probably Lozengradtsi), which were constructed during the fall of 1951, but informant did not know their exact location or length. 17. A 6-sided bunker, constructed during the winter of 1950 and about 50 centimeters above ground, is located approximately 10 meters south of the memorial and approximately 20 meters west of the road to Komotini. The bunker has an inside height of about 2 meters with embrasures on all sides, a diameter of approximately three meters, and is lined with beams about 20 centimeters in diameter. The entrance is on the side facing the memorial. The bunker can accommodate approximately 20 men, but has operational capacity for only 10 men. 18. Another similar bunker, constructed during the spring of 1952, is located about 20 or 30 meters southwest of the zastava staff. Its dimensions are smaller than that of the above-mentioned bunker. The bunker will allegedly be destroyed because of its poor construction. 19. Antitank obstacles are located as follows: a. One on the road to Komotini; b. Two around the old customs house; and c. Two on the road to Momchilgrad. Approved For Release 2002/07/15 : CIA-RDP80-0081OA002200120044-6 Approved For Release 2002/07/15 : CIA-RDP80-0081OA002200120044-6 20. Minefields are located on the Komotini road, extending out approximately 100-150 meters on the west, and about 200-250 meters on the east of the road. On the west side, the mine field is enclosed by two rows of barbed wire set on small poles about 50 centimeters high. On the east side of the road, this fence is only about 100 meters from the road. From this point, in the direction of the border, the minefield is not enclosed. Infantry positions are located on the sides of the road, but informant could give no information concerning their number or system of emplacement. Antitank mines are placed on the road. The mining of this section of the road was carried out during 1950. 21. A barbed wire entanglement is located about 60 meters south of the mine field on the Komotini road. It starts near the west side of the road ravine and ends on the water trail of the zastava observation tower, east of the road to Komotini. The barbed wire entanglement consists of two parallel lines, approximately 150 centimeters high. The lines. are placed approximately 150 centimeters apart, with four or five rows of barbed wire. Between the two rows is crossed wire. 22. The observation tower of 4 "Ruen" Zastava, subordinate to Border Guard Komandatura, Podelenie 4562, is located about 50 meters from the hedge which outlines the border in this area. The observation tower is of the open-platform type, and is located in a cleared place in the woods. The exact location of the tower is shown on Appendix C on page 9. 23. The observation tower is manned by three soldiers, with one of them equipped with binoculars on his watch. The other two soldiers protect him, with one covering the south side of the tower almost at the border line, and the other near the tower where he can see inland. The latter is equipped with a telephone booth for connections with the zastava. T1ie first protector has the duty of watching for persons coming from outside, and the second to watch for persons going out of the country. The watches, from, 0800 to 2000, are uninterrupted for the 12-hour period. The "starshiyat" of the group is armed with an automatic and the other two soldiers with weapons. 24. The 5 "Vezhen" Zastava has a similiar observation tower near Tikhomir, but informant was unable to give any information concerning the location. (See Appendix C on page 9).
