1. The headquarters of 13 Border Guard Otryad,l I are located at
Lyubimets (N 41-50, E 26-05), Svilengrad Okoliyaj, and include., approximately
550-600 aen aund 36 officers. The otryad id housed in barracks constructed
during 1950 in the eastern sector of the tillage, near the Svilengrad highway.
The barracks are approximately 200 meters south of the Maritsa River and
1,500-2'000 meters fr?*the point at which the Svilengrad highway crosses the
railroad line.- The barracks central building is two stories high, has an attic
and a cellar, is painted grey with a red tile roof, and is approximately 80-90
meters long and 1012 meters wide.

3. The 13 Border Guard Otryad is composed of the followings
a. The 1 Komandatura,

Approximately six,to seven zastavas are attached to each komandatura, giving-

The otryad headquarters are equipped with the following vehicles:
a. A Soviet GAZ jeep;
be Two trucks, one a ZL$;'and
c. One horse-drawn cart.
6. The only guard duty pulled by members of the headquarters detachment is at posts
in'the immediate vicinity of the barracks.
7. Attached to'the otryad headquarters area.
a. A training battalion;
be A reserve company;
c. A communica tLons unit; and
d. ,A school for training watch dogs.
8. The' training battalion is composed of four companies and approximately 450 men.
The soldiers are of the 1932 and 1933 classes. This battalion includes the
following officers,

c. Nine MGM-34 light machine guns.
The members of the training battalion are not equipped with gas masks.

13. The 4 Company subordinate to the training battalion is called "Asen Zlatarov""
and includes 96 men, a commanding officer,'a political commissar, three platoon
leaders, Qne warrant officer, and nine squad leaders. The following are some

Ili. The 13 Border Guard Otryad Reserve Company has approximately 60-70 Border Guards
from the 1930, 1931, and 1932 classes. The latter were inducted during February
1952. This company is commanded by a lieutenant assisted by a junior lieutenant,
and is armed with short Mosin rifles, Zbryovka revolvers,, two Maksim.heavy machine
guns on Sokolov mounts, and one mortar. The company is not equipped with gas masks,
antitank or antiaircraft guns.
15. The 13.Border Guard Otryad Communications Unit, is also a 50X1-HUM
communications training school. It consists of approximately 20-25 men who are
taken fpom the ranks of the training battalion and are. subjected to a 5 -month
course in telephone operating or W/T. The members of this unit are armed with
Zbryovka pistols. The commanding officer of this unit is an unidentified senior
lieutenant who is a specialist in communications. The members of the unit are
trained in the use of the following three types of telephones:
a. An old Bulgarian type used only on unimportant lines;
b. A
telephone mounted in a wooden box; and
co A modern Soviet telephone which was brought into the wide use in the Bulgarian
Army; the telephone is mounted in a box, has earphones, and three buttons on
the box.
16. Aschool for training watch, doge. is located in''the camp area of 13 Border Guard.
Ot rYYad in Lyubimets. The 'school consists of 10 modern dog houses and one old
building. It trains dogs to be used by the zastavas subordinate to 13 Border
Guard Otryad. During February 1953, the school had approximately 20 dogs trained
by 10-12 soldiers, commanded by a Senior Sergeant. The dogs are trained for
gua`~rding and for searching. Mongrels are also used for guarding, without any
special training,' The trained watch dogs are used to guard` the zastavas or the
borcler.area. They are tied to long ropes attached to post near a sekret (hidden,
permanent guard post). They are trained to bark if they. spot an intruder. Dogs
trained to hunt down intruders are used in free hunts and in controlled hunts,
where the dog's master holds onto the dog. These dogs are usually trained not
to bark and to throw themselves on the intruder. The school uses Soviet training
systems and the commands are issued in Russian. The dogs are subjected to a
special diet. No Soviet personnel was observed at the school. Soldiers who took
part in the dog training program were promoted to -privatefirst class and were
told not to associate with the other soldiers. The thoroughbred dogs are estimated
tos be worth 80,000 leva (old). .
17. The "Bozhur" zastava, has three-dogs which are used for guard
near the zastava. These dogs were not given special training. The "Kosovki" 50X1-HUM
and`. the "Tintyavati zastavas also have watchdogs (number unknown.)
