When martial law had been declared in Berlin on 17 June 1953, most of the VPs of Inspektion Mitte in Berlin were restricted to their stations. Demonstrators urged the VPs to join their ranks. At noon on 18 June, the situation was so critical tha-11 VP-Rat Arnold (fnu), chief of Inspektion Mitte, requisitioned reinforcements which he was promised by the operation headquarters after several telephone calls, The police precincts were reinforced by groups and platoons of up to 30 that's arntcc I'll ;xi rapid-fire rifles and submachine guns. The personnel of the precincts was simulta- neous issued carbines, submachine guns and model 42 machine guns. 2. KVP personnel patrolled the area of the sector border under the guidance of regular police. Companies employed in the Mitte area were quartered in the Ulbricht Stadion. Sixty men were available as alert unit. Personnel of KVP officers schools were on patrol duty at night. 3. On 18 June 1953, when the Soviet units arrived, differences dc3velOped bet?rrwvn the regular police and the KVP which both claimed to have the authority of command and failed to receive orders from the operations headquarters. Orders on places of em- ployment and security measures were communicated only by personal contact. 4. The alert of Inspektion Mitte ended on 11 July. The precincts were, however, still 0 stiffened by KVP platoons and groups which came from the northeast area or Saxony. 25X1 A IICo went. The KVPs employed in Berlin were probably subordinated to local police offices because the forces of these offices were core familiar with the locality.
