on the quay. The quay itself is a properly constructed wharf; it is built
between piles, which were driven into the river bed and the sloping river 50X1-HUM
bank, and it is faced with stone. The upper part of the quay, which is
used as the waiting berths, is approximately 500 feet long, but it consists
only of piles. The intervening space had not been filled in; however, the
river bank was revetted as in the case of the lower berths.

as wooden parts or boxes and cases, were stored in the area. The quay
itself is a half-hour journey by car from the center of Arkhangelsk.
The supply of coal at the depot at Arkhangelsk Pier Station appeared to
be low. An icebreaker was observed bunkering at the depot, but no ships
were observed replenishing the supply. A vessel of about 2,000 to 3,000
tons dead weight was discharging a cargo of coal at the depot at
Solombala, which lies between the quay at Sawmill No. 1617 and the
shipyard. This coal depot is equipped with four cranes, each of which
has a capacity of five tons.
