In July 1953, source learned from a Soviet that the air force construe 'lion unit had left I4ahlwinkel airfield in about mid June 1953. 25X1X 0 2. On 24 July, Mahiwrinkel ?d. rfield was not occupied and no sentries were ob- served there. The landing; field was covered with grass about 20 cm high. An area at the ncr there edge of the field had been mowed, The trees had been cleared from the. western edge of the field to as far as about 600 me-, tern from the perimeter of I?ahlwinkel0 The tree trunks were out in oieces and piled up while the branches, were scattered about. A sign with the following inscription in .English and French was observed at kilometer marker 3.7 on the flahlwrinkel.0obbel roads "Passage for members of military missions 25X1 and foreigners pxvhib ted0" 3. No occupation was observed at the field on 29 July. k.. On 10 August,,, the pine woods along the western edge of the field were cut in an estimated dimension of 1u5 hectares. The trunks had not yet been removed. The grass on the fie2 was 10 to 15 cm high. 5. Prior to 10 Sq temberp the airfield was unoccupied and lightly girded by two civilians0 Source le arned that, the grass on the landing field was to be mowed by 23 August. From this it wars inferred that the airfield would be occupied by that date. However, no occupation occurred. The timber in the cleared area along the western edge of the field had not to en removed by 10 Sep ter bar. 25X1 A r3z Clearing work along the west-northwestern edge of i inhlwinkel airfield was confirmed. This work possibly was conducted in order to improve the flying lane. It can be asaamed that the airfield will be used curing comin ; maneuvers this year.
