(FOR KEY SEE REVERSE) 1. In addition to the training hospitals of the Medical Academy the following hospitals are to be found in Gdansk (Danzig) and vicinity: a. The Municipal Hospital b. The Railroad Hospital c. TheIUB Aplyclinic d. The Naval Hospital Gdansk, ul.Swierczewskiego. Oliwa,.Aleja Sprzymierzonych. 2. The Municipal~Hos,pital includes'the following departments 25X1 a. Mer>0s and Women's Surgical Departments which have 3 operating theaters, 2 dressing rooms, approximately 9O.bed anda'iedical staff of four doctors. b. Medical Department which has approximately 90 beds and a medical staff of four doctors. c Maternity-Department which has infant and pre-natal clinics, approximately 115 beds.,and a staff of two doctors. d. Gynecological Department which as approximately I10 beds and a staff of two doctors, 3. The technical equipment of these departments in the Municipal Hospital is rather primitive and antiquated. Plans for the modernization of the hospital are en- countering extensive administrative and financial difficulties. Investments are purely accidental and are usually due to the initiative and very energetic personal endeavors made by the doctors intcharge. From the point of ;view of administration and finance, the hospital is subordinated to the Health Department of the Municipal National Council (M.R.N.) headed by Wanda Tyszkowa. The hospital is now being enlarged,,-which should bring some improvement in the present situation, 4. In the summer of 1952 the adaptation for hospital use of an adjoining building was completed and the Maternity and Gynecological artments were transferred there (see sketch point 2). Moreover new wings (see sketch paint 1) are under construction. In an emergency something could be done to adapt bth'er adjoining'. bui:Ldings4 he completion of a new wing, which- at~ the moment; is? in a very raw state= will solve the difficulties in handling the arrival of patients now caused by the bottleneck at the entrance to the main building. At present there is not-,-sufficient room for a number of ambulances with patients to halt in front of the entrance a.d to take out their patients efficiently. 5. The main building as well as the newly adapted one (ketcli point's 2_:?and3?) are made of brick, and are old but in good condition. Water and plumbing installations work efficiently, The telephone installations are good on the whole,, excepting :.:~. a few rooms used by doctors-on=duty where telephones have been out of commission for some time. 6. The main approach to the hospital is by the wide, asphalted U1. Swierczewskiego. It lies at about 100 to 450 meters from the nearest railway station.. There is no tree cover in the immediate neighborhood. of the'-hospital; the nearest are tb be found in the park on the other side of the railway line (sketch point 10). 7. The standard of medical and nursing service in this hospital is comparatively high. Patients are better cared for than in the Medical Academy. Difficulties in medical work are created by the limited capacity of the laboratory where analyses are made. Moreover there is a general shortage of nurses and orderlies which is also felt in all other hospitals. Patient ;-in need of radiological examinations and ray- therapy (radium, etc.) in connection 11th growths are sent by the hospital to the Medical Academy. Patients are admitted to the Municipal,.Hospitals on the basis of certificates issued by the regional physicians. 8. The Railroad Hospital is subordinated, as far as organization goes, to the are given a chit,amimeographed form -H:.-_th a triangular stamp affixed in navy blue ink. The doctors employed at the U.B. Polyclinic also work in other institutions of the Health Service. An old employee of the U.B. Polyclininc is Dr. Kieszkowski (brother of Tadeusz). Until 1952 Dr. Zdzislaw Dobreanski also worked here 25X1 Health Department of D.O.K"P. (District Board of State Railroads)., Before being engaged for work by the Personnel Section of the Voivodship tm . employees of the Security Apparatus are sent to its own polyclinic for a medical and fitness examination. The examination is very thorough. The candidates 10. The hospital.has up to date installations,, and its own means of transportation for its patients. The building is of brick, is modern, and has a convenient wooded approach along old roadside trees. The Naval Hospital treats service people and their families. It comprises, among others, a children's department under Dr. Czeslaw Velento (ranking as captain). The hospital consists of a block of pavilions surrounded by trees and gardens. One can enter from Aleja Sprzymierzonych or from a parallel street running along the heavily wooded top of the Oliwa hills. The entrance to and movement within the grounds are strictly controlled. The hospital lies at a distance of about 1,90O.meters from the nearest railroad station as the crow flies, or about 1,500 meters by a country road and 2,500 meters by the roundabout way that is fit for continuous traffic. Infox?mation dated 19+8 13. The Narutowicz Hospital in Krakow, Ul. P.radnicka,,employs about 15 doctdrs and 50 nurses, technicians, etc. and has the following departments-. a. Surgical men and women) - 80 beds b. Medical (men and women) - qO beds C. Maternity d. Gynecological e. ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) f. Urological 11i. It has three up-to-date, very well equipped operating theaters: Generally speaking, the hospital is modern, part of its technical equipment is of origin. The standard of :treatment is high, :the ?niarsing care' is good,'-but'.patients care dismissed too early, 15. The building is made of brick, has two wings, and is modern.. The distance to the nearest railroad line is about 8f) meters; the track runs at about 'fourL ers below the road bridge. The road is hard surfaced and in good condition'u There is no tree cover. The unloading of patients is efficient. Employees of the hospital arrive by a hospital bus and use a canteen on the spot. Some live in the vicinity of the hospital, 16. The Railroad Hospital on Ul. Roosevelta in Szczecin (Stettin) has only two departments.' a. Surgical (men and women) - about 40 beds. b. Medical (men and women) - about 50 beds. It employs only two doctors and eight nura6s. There'are good chances for expansion, the whole of the third floor is empty. Moreover the adjoin.;ng building rich is dwned by the hospital is due to be done up. There is no tree cover and no railway line nearby, The following health centers located in and near Gdansk are well known a. The Fort Specialists' Outpatients Center Health Center 'A' and Health Center tB b. The Health Center of the Gdansk Shipyard on the dhipyard premises. Gdansk, Nowy Port Ul. Oliwska The VII Municipal Specialists Outpatients' Center,, Wrzeszcz, Ul. The Port Specialists Outpatients' Center deals with the areasof Nowy Port, Brzezna, Letniewo)and it treats inhabitants of these areas as well as employees of the Gdansk port and seamen. The manager iCs Dr, Aleksander Zdanowicz. The Center has one passenger uto_-, one ambulance and one van. 19, It is divided itito Centers 'A.t and 'B' which are housed in separate buildings, about 500 meters apart. It employs 11 doctors and 23 nurses. 20. Center 'A' has the following departments: General, Surgical (with a small operating theai?r~). Laryngological, Oculist, Anti-T.B. for adults, Anti-T.B. for children, BCG vaccination station, Dental section (with three chairs), Anti-alcoholic, Derma-iological and VD section, Physio-therapy department, 25X1 and Taboratory.. The building also contains a well:eupplied dispensary and a peni- eill+r (for injection when prescribed). The Center has two X-ray machinbs, 2 electro-cardiographs, physio-therapy lampsjand 1 dental X-lay machine.. Plans-have been made for the organization of a sick bay with 15 beds. Nurses., and the janitor live in the building. Some of the nurses live in service flats on Ul, Sniezna.in Letniewo. Center *A' is located in the new building (built 1952), which has inside water, plumbing, and gas installations. Railway lines lie at a distance:: f about 500 meters. There is no tree cover except for a few single trees nearby. 21. Center 'B' has a section for expectant mothers, for sick and healthy children and a gynecological section. The building is old and has been adapted for its present purposes. It also contains a few flats for employees. The distance to the railway station is about 50 meters and there are no trees.. 22. The Health Center of the Gdansk Shipyard treats employees of the shipyard., The director is Dr. Badowski (fnu). It has the' following sections: Surgics1, Medical Industrial hygiene;: Dental, Anti-alcoholic, Anti-T.B., Physio-therapy, and a laboratory. The equipment is up-to-date although the building has been adapted to its present use. The Center has its own ambulance, nine doctors, and 14 nurses. 23. The VII Municipal Specialists Outpatients Center conforms to the generally accepted model of a health center, combined with a sanitation office. It employs about 12 doetbrs afd":20.nurses. There is difficulty in finding an efficient and energetic' director for this center. The equipment is sufficient although the laboratory is small. The building is an old one adapted for the purpose. Nearby are trees, a park and an avenue. The distance from a railway line is about 200 meters. The center has no transportation of its own but uses vehicles of the Voivodship First Aid Post.
