Employment in Wroclaw (Breslau) is secured only through the Central Employment Office, but the regulations are not strictly adhered to by enterprises. Persons are often employed and the Employment Office notified later. This is particularly true in the case of Party members seeking work, and accordingly they enjoy greater freedom in choosing their place of employment. 50X1-HUM 2. Managers and employees i r sponsible with the exception of bookkeepers, must be Party members. the shortage of expert accountants has caused the relaxation o is rule. 3. Wages range from 600 to 800 zloty per month for an unskilled laborer. The average salary of an engineer or administrative official is between 1,500 and 2,000 zloty, and that of the general manager of a medium size organization, 2,500 zloty. Engineers are allowed to accept additional work (drawings, etc.) to be done at home, from the enterprise which employs them,and are paid for this separately. Managers and assistant managers receive premiums on various occasions during the year. ~. The only deduction made from a worker's wage is for income tax. An unmarried employee pays 108 zloty on a monthly salary of 1,600 zloty. Social insurance, medical care, etc., are available free of charge to all employed persons. 5. Young people between 16 and 18 years of age who are not at school are conscripted for two gears of national service. This consists partly of premilitary training and partly of work in various government public works projects. They usually serve the two years in their home town, but are accommodatdd`insinilitar".barracks..and are trained and supervised in their work by army instructors. 6. There are 20 bridges over the Oder River at Wroclaw. Several were damaged during the war but have been repaired since. 7.'The UB (Security Police) and the Regional Police Headquarters for Lower Silesia are accommodated in a large building on Muze A1na Street. Heavy industrial enterprises at Wroclaw include: a. Archimedes Screw Factory. b. Communications Equipment Plant (Wytwornia Sprzetu Komunikacyjnego.), producing vehicle accessories. 9. The farmers have no incentive to keep part of their produce as prices on the free market are often lower than those paid by the official marketing organizations. Since food rationing was abolished in January 1953, all products can be obtained openly and in any required quantity at official prices. There is virtually no black market in food products, and only a very small difference between free and official prices when seasonal shortages occur.
