1. .The Eisenhuetten:kombinat West (mw), Calbe-An.halt* was constructed, as part of the
'f'ramework of the first Five-Year Plan Today, it stands in a central position
in..pi.g iron production. The plant lies within the central part of the terminus,
in the immediate vicinity of the railway station, It possesses extensive additional
trackage, so that raw products can be hauled in and out with ease.
2."k Construction of a special ha ?bor for the Calbe-A ialt plant is already
conteanplated This is expected to make it cheaper to move raw materials intox
and. out aft the smelting works
The labor force of the m.W is now about three thousand persons., Of these1
about forty percent are women. Young men constitute about twenty percent of the
laborers,* or about 600, There are ~;bouk 120 young women. As of 17 Tune 1953,
about two hundred of these lsborer~ 'belonged to the BED.
C txructton work at the EK)T has now eached. the point where ten low shaft

6* ~''he low shaft (Niedersc;back) furnace installation is supposed to be the only
one in Europe, though, there may be 'sthing like it in Belgium, It works on
the principle of the cxc,di nar?ry blast furnace, but has one advantage in that "sour"
ores, with strrdrsg gr nui.a,t tca1 (and above ally German, ores) can be worked, .Hence,
even in Caibe, ones from the BA..rz: l+ utatns are, used exclusively.
According to the axlalysis in Paragraph 5 above, the proportion of brown coal coke,.
50 kilograms, is .very sma:1,1, This is due to the fact that the briquettes of brown
coal coke do not, prodnoe the r cesaar.;y :high temperatures and &re too easily
broken,
The 1952 production quota for the U W was 60,000 tons. Later, this was raised
to 70,000 tons? Actual, p.roductio y however was far behind expectations,, .
and, the total, production for 1952 -turned outs to be 35,,000 tons of pig iron.
The reason given far this was tbat several of the, ten furnaces now in operation.
had not been completed on time.
9,.. Pig iron from the b .W is eventually to be delivered tp. East German manufacturing
plants, which. include, among other. s, toe V WerkZeugmaechinenfabrik Union Gera.
