1. The return to school of Central University students after the summer vacation
has swelled the ranks of the Juventud Comunista del Ecuador (JCE) organization
in Quito, and, in anticipation of increased activity on the part of the JCE, an
assembly of Communist Youth directors met at Party headquarters on 2L September
1953 to establish an executive committee for the JCE. The committee is composed
of the following:
Patricia CUEVA Jaramillo - President of the JCE1
Oswaldo CHAVEZ Cevallos - Organization Secretary and delegate to the
Executive Committee of the Fartido Comunista
del Ecuador (PCE)
Mario CARDENAS - Finance Secretary
Gandhi BURBANO - Propaganda Secretary
Gustavo GALINDO Velasco - Secretary-General of the JCE.1 GALINDO is also
acting as Propaganda Secretary, during the tem-
porary absence of BURBANO, who is serving a
short term as a military conscript in the Ecua-
doran army.
2. One of the most important problems faced by the JCE is the preparation for the
coming elections of representatives of the several schools within the Central
University (and the Universities of Guayaquil, Loja, and Cuenca) to the council
of the Federacion de Estudiantes Universitarios del Ecuador (FEUE) and the sub-
sequent selection of the presidents of the local branches of the FEUE. Members
of the Executive Committee of the JCE have recently indicated that they are
'getting along well" with Socialist student leaders in the Central University,
and that they are hopeful of even greater co-operation with the Socialists this
year than they have had in the past.
