In, mid-July 1953, a free market for fruit and vegetables was. reopened in
Chemnitz, Saxony. Producers were permitted to sell their wares freely,
including produce included in their planned quotas as well as that
produced in excess of the quotas. Prices were set by the producers,
wholesale dealers, and retail merchants. Official price controls were
restricted to formal checks.
