1. By the end of August 1953 all work on the Danube--Black Sea Canal had stopped
and excavators at Cernavoda were in the process of being dismantled and
shipped back to the Soviet Union.
2. One;'possible cause for the cessation of this wor k is the fact that there had
been a considerable seepage of water from the eastern section of the canal
which threatened to flood all the low--lying gro?.lnd in this area.
