1. Approximately 300 sailors have been selected from among those now being
released from the Polish Navy to attend a two-month course of training
for the merchant marine, after which they will be drafted to merchant
marine ships. This is the first time naval enlisted men have been used
in this way on such a scale, and it is hoped that it will go some way
to meet the merchant marine's great need for men.
A trial of the scheme was made with a smaller number of sailors last year.
It is likely that, when the new candidates are allocated, the most suspect
merchant marine men will be dismissed.
