Some months prior to"October 1953, Dr. K. Sorgenfrei of the East German Ministry
of-Health Central Serimi Institute in Berlin-Pankow, Wollankstrasse 16, ordered
a number of typhoid strains'from Poland. He needed these to'improve the typhoid
diagnosis in his institute. The order was made through diplomatic channels.
2. On 21 October 1953, a number of typhoid strains left Poland. They arrived at the
Ee.st`German"institute on 13 November. They came via DIA (the East German trading
organi "ation), the Central ' Office' for Research and Technology (ZAFT) and Frau
Caecilie Bode.1 At the same time, a list of the'strains which were shipped reached
the institute. This list is reproduced below,(Ainex 1)
3. The East German Ministry of Health believes that the strains must represent'endemic
epidemic strains of typhoid in Poland. It is noted that these strains cannot long
be maintained'artificially in a scientific institute but must be constantly renewed
from fresh material.
1 Comments Frau Caecilie Bode is well-known as the secret ?of the German-
Po~..is fission of Wissensohaftlich-Technische Zusammenarbeit (WTZ~, the scientific
and technical cooperation section of ZAFT.
