THE APPRAISAL OF CONTENT IS TENTATIVE. 25X1 X (FOR KEY SEE REVERSE) 25X1A 11 February 1954 1. In early July 1953 the headquarters of the Sindong-ni (N 39-41, E 127-29) (CU- 7093) Armed Self-Defense Unit in South Hamgyomg Province was at CU-697931, approximately 400 meters north of Sindong-ni in a semi-underground house. This house belonged to the chief of the Unit, CHANG Hong-chae (1728/1738/0961). The unit was equipped with. only one Soviet-made Mossin-Nagant rifle, which had been given to it by the Sins?.ng-myon Police Station in PlachlunJang (N 39-39, E 127-25) (cu-649o). 2. The Unit was responsible for guarding the coast in the ,Sindong-ni area. Two of the members, one of whom was armed with the Unit's only rifle, manned a sentry box, which was constructed with logs end camouflaged with sand, on the beach at CU-705926, about 400 meters east of Sindong-ni. These guards were checked twice a night at irregular hours by CHANG Hong-chae.. In the event of an enemy attack, one of the guards was to report to CHANG at his home. During the day two unarmed members of the Sindong-ni Democratic Youth Association manned the sentry box. Members of the Self-Defense Unit included the following: a. CHANG Hong-chae, aged 30, chief of the Unit, a primary school graduate, farmer, and zealous Korean Lehr Party (KIP) member. b, SIN To-yon (3947/6670/8673), aged 31, assistant chief of the Unit, a primary school graduate, and zealous KLP member. c. CH'OE Chong-son (1508/6945/0810), aged 37, a fisherman. d.
