The Naval Repair Workshops in Sukhumi and their subsidiary mine storehouses
were only partly in operation in summer 1951, as the extension. to these
shops was not begun until the end of 1949. The site of the shops is on
the coast to the east of Sukhumi, to the west of the railway line coming
from the east and running along the sea front until it bends away to the
north, some 12 kilometers east of Sukhumi, by-passing the town on. the north
through a tunnel. The area of the workshops measures about 300 x 300 meters.
Its eastern boundary runs along the railway embankment while its southern
boundary runs along the sea front.
2. The accommodation for workers (No. 2 on the sketch on page d) is situated
some 300 meters to the north of the workshops and some 200 meters SSE of
the railway bridge over which the railway described above crosses a river
approximately 30 meters wide, which flows into;__the sea in the eastern part
of Sukhumi town.
3. In summer 1951 the whole of the workshop area had been levelled. The
eastern boundary was enclosed by a four-meter high wooden fence to prevent
the area from being overlooked from passing trains.
4. The following buildings were on the grounds of the workshops:
a. The workshop administration building (No. 4 on the sketch), with brick
walls, faced and color-washed in green-brown. The building has two
stories and 24 offices. It is in the northeast corner of the area,
near the railway bridge (No. 3 on the sketch).
b. The Mechanical Workshop G'f4ekhanicheskiy Tsekh" - No. 7 on the sketch),
size approximately 100 x 50 meters by 9 meters high, fitted with
skylights. In summer 1951 about 40 benches for high-speed processing,
six planing machines, and approximately six grinding machines were
installed in this hall. In.some of the shops there were still some

empty positions for machines which had not yet arrived. The foundations
Mere ready with built-in anchoring bolts.
c. The department for processing iron sheets for ships' hulls (No. 12 on
the sketch) had been fully installed by summer 1951. This department
had three large sheet-cutting machines with a maximum cutting length
of two meters, three hole-punching machines, and a hydraulic shaping
machine for bending sheet iron.
d. Raw materials, tools, and accessories were stored in a primitive wooden
building with a sheet iron roof (No. 6 on the sketch), situated on the
western. edge of the shop area.
e. The transformer plant, which was fully equipped by summer 1951, is in
the center of the area (No. 5). Current is supplied over the high-
tension overhead circuit. Apart from this, current can be supplied
by the municipal thermal power station at Sukhumi. All electrical
installation work throughout the area was completed by summer 1951.
f. The sea front is formed by a quay wall. Two moles were already in
use. A breakwater, of which about 600 meters had been completed, was
under construction in summer 1951. About six barges and two sea-going
tugs brought stones for building the breakwater. On each mole there
were three cranes,' each with a lifting capacity of 1.5 to 2 tons.
g. Along the eastern border of the works area there are two underground
passages (Nos. 8 and";- ), which lead under the railway line in an.
easterly direction for a distance of about 300 meters. These passages
lead to the mine storehouses under the hill to the east of the shop
area. Ground and floating mines are stored here. A narrow-gauge
railway track leads from the underground passages to the moles. Two
small Diesel locomotives draw special cars along this narrow-gauge
track.
h. The workshop area is planted with deciduous trees and bushes for camou-
flage purposes.
Personnel:
5, a. The Chief of the Workshops is Engineer Zamurayev.
b. The Chief Engineer is Engineer Khukiy, who is responsible .for installing

.7. A group of warships, consisting of mine-layers, mine-locating craft and
motor torpedo boats, is stationed at Sukhumi.
8. In summer 1951 two mine-locating craft were alongside the new moles.

is a large building site. Levelling work was proceeding in summer 1951,
