On 8 December 1953 a North Korean army unit with about 30 infantry and about 40 engineer and artillery troops was on Mahap-to (N 37-55,,'!E.124-58) (XB-7398)? Officer, personnel consisted of one senior captain, one Junior captain, two lst lieutenants, and three 2nd lieutenants, engineer and artillery, and two 2nd lieutenants, infantry. The mission of the unit was to guard the islar}d and the nearby coastal area. There were seven sentry boxes-.on the island, with one guard posted at each box day and night. 2. Since 7 August the infantry troops had been at XB-725983 where they constructed a cave .bout four, meters in diameter. The engineer and artillery troops, stationed at XB-723987 since'25 August, had built three round caves, Bach About four meters in diameter, at XB-725978 on Hill 112, XB-7"97$, a,1d XB-723981. The engineer ndl4rtillery troops had also constructed four gun positions, one each; at ~$ , _*720979, XB 720981y , XB-719980, and X13-V0982. At each Qf the positions ....- 1`was on?' 16 4vm direct firing g>.n. I'Pire of them 'were pointed toward the`'Grest, and one toward the southwest. In addition to the four direct firing duns., the unit was equipped with nine pistols and 61 rifles and PPSh's. The unit also had three telephones. North Korean Army Supply Mgtor Boat 3. On 8 December 1953 a 30 horsepower, wooden motor, boat belonging to the North Korean army stopped at Mahap-to. The boat was 35 feet long and had , speed of ?y .. about nine knots. It towed a sail boat about 50 feet'long which was loaded with sqpplies. The seven-man crew was armed. These boats made a run twice monthly during daylight hours to the following places: Wollae'-do (XC-595130), Yuk+to (XC-693151), Kumip'o (XC-76+152), Mahap-to, Kirin-do (XB-790883), Ch'angnin-do (XB-89& 1i-), and Haeju. lying the period from 5 August to 8 December the boats stopped at Mahap-b on 5 August, 25 August, early and hate September, early and late'~October, earir and late November, and on 8 December.
