Prior to mid-October 1953, the area within a seven to eight li radius of Yaimen (N 22-14, E 113-04) had been designated by the Chinese Communist authorities in the area as a restricted military zone.' 2. During mid-October Communist military authorities summoned Yaimen village residents tb a public meeting at which it was decided that a mutual guarantee board (lien pao ch'u, 5114/0202/5710) be formed for the enforcement of the five households' mutual guarantee system. With the formation of the mutual guarantee board, all villagers were prohibited from entering or leaving the restricted area without having obtained prior approval from military repre- sentatives on the board.
