1.. In early November 1953 several thousand miners had been recruited by the Chinese
Communists in Anhwei to prepare for the opening of the following iron mines;
the Yu Fan (591+.0/1907) iron mine at T'aoch'un.g (2711/0394) in Fanch gang (N 31-06,
E 118-011.) Hsien, the Maanshan (7456/7251E/1472) iron mine in Tangt'u (N 31-31+,
E 118-29) Hs:i.en, and the T'ungkuangshan (6894/1351/111.72) iron m:i.ne in T 4unglin.g
(N 30-56, E 117-1+0) Hsien. Operations in these mines had been suspended when the
Chinese Communists took over Anhwei. All the iron ore produced, with the exception
of some to be supplied for the use of the Maanshan. steel mill, which was being
repaired,l was to be transported to other areas for processing.
2. In early June 1953 an iron deposit was discovered by the Chinese Communists at Yin-
p' ingshan (6892/0988/1472) in the vicinity of Ch' ingch' ihs LI, near the border of
Tungkuan (N 23-02, E 113-46) Hsien and Paoan (N 22-32, E 113-56) Hsien and 50
kilometers southwest of Hui.yang (N 23-05, E 111-26) Hsien.2 After a survey by
Soviet advisors and Chinese Communist geologists', more than 500 miners were recruited
to open a mine to exploit the deposit.

announced that Shanghai's foundry shops were being supplied with pit iron from
the nearby iron ore center of Maanshan., where an iron smelting plant was being
restored.
Comment. On 26 November 1953 the Hsin Hua News Agency, Shanghai,

June 1952, two mines were being worked in Huiyang Hsien under the supervision
of Soviet advisors. One of the mines, reportedly a. gold mine, was located
in Yinping (6892/7399) Mountain about 50 kilometers southwest of Huiyang.
