1. Former German underground depots have been cleaned up and reconditioned and
turned into dumps for small calibrek*ard artillery ammunition, at Nowa Ruda,
'Ludkowice, Kamienna Gora and Scincwka near Klodzko (Glatz'.P51/H34).
2. A former German underground ammunition factory, partly fitted out with mach-
'finery and installations left by the Germans~is located near Klodzko, at
Wiloze Doly, Gory Stolotire and Kamlenna Gora, Lack of care and maintenance
has resulted in damage to some of these installations. Since the summer of
1953 soldiers have been employed in reconditioning the existing installations.
,3. The quarries and mines 9s, Ruda are manned exclusively by soldiers of
auxiliary companies (KomplOft pomoonicze) These companies are composed of
men called up for normal military service, but not incorporated in normal.
army units because they are not considered politically reliable, i.e., those
with relatives abroad., and -those who have been punt-sked for attempted escape
from Poland and similar offences; Since these "soldierrminers" have no ex-
perience in working underground, there are numerous fatal accidents among them.
The number of fatal accidents is increased by the technical personnel, the
"experts" or professionals, who also lack sufficient experience and. training
for the posts they occupy. Most of them have been "socially promoted" (z,-a iau
spoleoznego) for services rendered to the Party and the State.
4. Many Bulgarians )ermans and Ukrainians are- employed in the 25X1
mines in Lower 3 esia, The administrative authorities are especially con-
cerned about the Germans and try to make their lives as easy as-possible. They
are granted the best accommodation, newspapers in their own language and
schools run in German. The Bulgarians and Ukrainians are
much worse off, because no one takes any inzerest in em, and the. local popu- 25X1
lation refuses to have anything.to.do with them, calling them communist tramps.
