OF ENCLS> (USTEO SF-LOW) SUPPLEMENT -rO REPORT NO. THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION 1. The steel mill in Groeditz near Riess is divided into Stahlwerk and Stahiwerk 2. In addition there is a band rolling mill (Bandagenwalzwerk). 2. Stahlwerk 1 has four Siemens-Martins furnaces, Three of them have a charge capacity of 40 metric tons each with a charge time of two hours each. The fourth furnace has a charge capacity of 60 metric tons and a charge time of two hours. Stahlwerk 2 has two electric furnaces with a charge capacity of five and ten tons respectively. The charge time of both furnaces is two hours. 3. The monthly production of the plant amounts to about 20,000 metric tons. An increase of production is not considered possible because it would endanger the furnaces. Forty percent of the production is band steel (Bandagen); the remainder is permanent-mold castings. The band steel as well as the permanent-mold castings are for use in East Germany. Most of the band steel goes to the East German railroad services, where it is used for wheel bands for all sorts of railroad oars, from the freight car to the largest locomotive El, which has a-wheel diameter of 2.20 meters. 4. Groeditz does not use ore but high quality steel scrap as raw material. It puts out about ten kinds of steel. The following are data or. three kinds of steel produced by the enterprise: A.
