termed the nucleus of the Resesech Institute.. The eapabilities of the
zelentific workers were above average? Rowever the Department lacked
experienced. testtne engineers and the few exerts were overworked. Difficultiee

U, Facilities for the Department consisted of approximato/y 6,000 square motere
of shed epace in Urlshorst in addition to the 700 square meters of shed speee
end 104000 square meters of open space in Potsdamc,
e, The principal aseignments of the Department were modeleexpertmente for rlever
and coastal constreetion projects and the formation of expert opinions on
these problemsp in September 1953 work was being performed on models of the
Elbe River near Dreaden and Meedeburg and on a model of the Oder River neer
Cauernitz(sie), The project a-visaged a solution to the problems in hydraulic
engineering in these areas? In Potsdam two large models were used to deternine
the most favorable harbor approach to Stralsund. For years the port entranee
had been blocked by continuous. sanding? One model tested the current conditions
in the neighborhood of the Isle of Ruegeu and the second model tested condiUons
between Ruegen and Riddenese. Plane were made to dredge the Bodden between
Ruegen and Hiddensee axed cut through the northern part ef Riddensee.
Experiments will be coecluded in the spring of 1954. Another large model
(3,400 square m ters) concerned the improvement of the port entrance at Wisnmr.
Experiments on dams and channel weirs were concluded and will be published in
the near future A model of the sluice for the Niederparete Canal also vas
teeted at the Reeearch Institute, Larger projects and experiment 25X1
eenalization of the Elbe River were planned for the future.
