Introduction
This report consists of 67 installations in 25X1
Mukachevo (N 48-26) - e varagrap1hi num ers correspond to the pinpoint
numbers which identify each installation on a city plan of Mukachevo 25X1
Annex 1 to this re ort .
1. Military Post
This military post covers an area of about 200,000 square meters. The
area is rectangular in shape, about 500 meters long and 4.00 meters wide.
The main entrance, which is on Beregovskaya Ulitsa (Ukrainian: Beregivska),
is flan}.d". by large barrack buildings which are from 100 to 150 meters
long and about 30 meters wide. All these buildings are three-storied and
are of grayish-yellow stuccoed brick with tile roofs. The same type of
building is seen on Ulitsy Molotova and Shevchenka. There are other
barracks in the center of the poft, as well as weapons depots, garages,
and vehicle repair shops. The post, _has a rather large motor pool.
The mess hall, which was built in x?950, is squarely in the center
of the post area. There is also a: y: A:!`my club here.

2. Oil Base
The administration building of the oil base is a corner building which was
built in 1949, It is about 60 meters long (30 meters from the corner to
each end) and 15 meters wide. It is two stories high and is constructed
of brick which has been covered with whitewashed stucco. The upper part
of the building is gray; the roof is red tile. All the administrative
offices of the Mukachevo oil base are located in this one building. On
an average day, 100 to 1.50 tons of all different kinds of fuel are
delivered to the base, which distributes the fuel among government
institutions on the basis of official orders. The area occupied by.the
oil base and the oil refinery joint ,7 together, is about 250,000
square meters; this area is surrounded by a barbed-wire fence. Admittance
to th'.oil base is by pass only. Passes are issued at the entrance gate.
A. person driving onto the 'base to procure fuel would have to present his
as port the putevo list (travel certificate) of the vehicle, and a
certificate made out in his name authorizing him to receive fuel from the
oil base,, The latter certificate would also contain the vehicle's license
number. A pass would be made out on the basis of these documents.
3? Oil Refinery
The oil refinery building is L-shaped, having a length of about 60 meters
on one side and 30 meters on the other; the width is about 30 meters.
It is a two-story building, The raw material is delivered by railroad and
is unloaded by pumps. A broad-gauge siding leads into the oil refinery.
Deliveries are made by about 10 to 15 railroad cars daily. Fuel is
transferred to the oil base LPoint 27 by means of a pipe line.
4. Gasoline Storage Areas
There are three POL storage warehouses and several dozen round iron storage
tanks on the premises and in the vicinity-of the oi.l.refinery and also on
the oil base. Kerosene and gasoline are brought in by railroad and unloaded
into the storage tanks by means of motor pumps? Mukachevo does not have
any ga,s stations (filling stations) with gasoline pumps. The old pumps
are out of use; many of them have been destroyed. The only way to obtain
'gasoline in Mukachevo is by official order.
5. Warehouse for Lubricants
This is a tile-roofed, brick building,about 50 meters by 20 meters in size.
There are loading platforms by the building. The warehouse is on the
premises of the oil base.
6. locomotive Re air Shops
This building is made of galvanized sheet iron. Its dimensions are about
100 meters by 40 meters,. It houses large locomotive repair shops in which
several engines can be repaired at one time.
7. Mukachevo Railroad Station
The original railroad station was destroyed during the war and a new building
has been erected,, It was opened early in 1950. It is a rather large brick
building, two stories high, with a tile roof, The outside is gray
stucco. The building houses a good restaurant, a lunch counter, and very
attractive waiting rooms. The walls and columns on the inside are, to a
large extent, faced with marble and, in part, with tile. The traffic at this
station is rather heavy,and the restaurant and ticket windows are crowded day
and might? Order is maintained by railroad militia, but document checks
almost never take place? Checks are made only when there is a search on
for someone. The sale of tickets to all parts of the USSR is unrestricted.
No documents are required for the purchase of a ticket. If the traffic is

especially heavy and there are too few tickets for a given train, priority is
given to persons with travel orders (komandirovochnyye udostovereniya).
8. Administration Building of the Lvov Railroad
This is a .gray stuccoed building, three stories high, about 70 by 20 meters
in size. All transport offices are located in this building.
9. Railroad Warehouses
These three structures have stone foundations, but the walls are of wood.
Roofing paper is used on the roofs. The buildings are about 50 by 20
meters in size. All goods which come into Mukachevo by :railroad are
stored here, as are goods waiting to be transported from Mukachevo by rail.
10. Military Hospital
There are four of five brick buildings at the military hospital. They
are set back about 50 meters from the sidewalk,and there is a brick wall
along the street side. The hospital buildings are all three-storied,
about 50 by 20 meters in size, with roofs of either tile or sheet iron.
11. Principal City Administration Building
This building was formerly the City Hall. It is a very large, horseshoe-
shaped building containing 150 rooms. The building material is brick or
stone; the roof is tile. 'There is a tall observation tower visible from
the sidewalk, The following offices have their official headquarters in this
building: GorispolkQm, Qorsovet, Blagoustroystvo (Office for Planning and
.........
Economzin of Public Services), and Gorkomunkhoz (City Directorate of Communal
Economy).
12. Communist Party Rayon Committee Building
This is a three-story9 stuccoed-.brick building, whitish-yellow in color,
with a tile roof. It is 40 meters across the front and has a 30-meter-
long wing at each end.
13. Mukachevo Polyclinic
This is a large L-shaped building which formerly was occupied by the
Czechoslovakian Labor Union (profsoyuz). The building is white stuccoed-
brick and has a tile roof. it is four stories high and the open side of
the L faces toward the .river. There is also a garage and a repair shop
for clinic vehicles located here. A large number of persons work at the
polyclinic. The chief accountant here is Ivan Liba.
lit. Large Hospital (Bolshaya Bolnitsa)
This hospital comprises a compound of several buildings, all of which are
four stories high and have tile roofs. The buildings extend along the
entire length of Bolnichnaya Ulitsa (Ukrainian: Bolnychna). The hospital
contains all the usual sections except those for venereal diseases and
tuberculosis. The walls and ceilings of the operating rooms at this
hospital are made of glass?
15. Hospital
This hospital consists of three, one-story brick buildings which are set back
from the street, There is a wooden fence along the street in front of this.
institution. The hospital, contains a section for the treatment of venereal
diseases, a tuberculosis section, and a dermatological section.

16. Children's Dispensary
This is a large, gray, stuccoed-brick building, three stories high, with
a.cement roof. It is about 120 meters in length and 30 to 40 meters wide.
The hospital is exclusively for the treatment of children up to five
years of age. It has all t1B usual departments. It is not necessary to
go to a polyclinic to obtain a permit (napravleniye) before bringing
a child to this hospital; a child under five can be brought directly to
the hospital. This hospital is staffed with the best doctors; the children
receive good treatment.
17. Rayon Executive Committee Building
This is a five-story building on the corner of Latorichnyy Dvor and
Ploshchad Stalina. The entrance is on Latorichnyyy Dvor. This is a gray,
stuccoed-brick structure with a tile roof.3
18. Bus Lines Ticket Office
On the ground floor of this corner building, a spacious waiting room and
ticket office are located. Tickets for all bus lines can be purchased
here. Buses stop at this office at scheduled times. The building is
at the far corner of Ploshchad Stalina.
19. Fire Station
This is a three-story brick building with a cement roof,. The building is
about 50 to 60 meters long and 15 meters wide. The garage is on the
ground floor. Mukachevo has about eight to ten fire trucks; as of
June 1952 they were painted red.
20. Flour Mill
The flour mill, which is electrically operated, is located off to the right
of the road leading to Uzhgorod, just beyond the bridge. It is a brick
building with a tile roof, is about 40 meters long and 30 meters wide,
and is two stories high. This is where the flour for the city's consumers
is milled. It is a municipal flour mill and is under the jurisdiction
of the Gorkomunkhoz.
21. Ukrainian Seven-Year School
This seven-year school is located in a gray stuccoed-brick building with
,one story and a tile roof. It is situated at a bend in the road leading
to Uzhgorod.
Ukrainian Business School
This was formerly a Hebrew high school. It is a large,three-story,gray
stuccoed-brick building, about 60 meters long and 40 meters wide, with a
tile roof.
23. Slaughter House
This is a large building about one and-one-half stories high beside
the Latoritsa River. All the city artels slaughter their cattle here.
The building is dark-gray stucco and has a sheet-iron roof. The
building is 50 to 60 meters long and 20 to 30 meters wide.
24. Mukachevo Printing Office
This is a large three-story brick building with a tile roof. It is 30
to 35 meters long and 20 to 25 meters wide. The workshops are on the ground

floor and the administrative offices are on the upper floors. This printing
office prints the rayon newspapers and all kinds of administrative material
for organizations. Until 1950, this printing office also made rubber stamps.
However, early in that year the MGB decreed that only the Zakarpatskaya
Oblast printing office in Uzhgorod was authorized to produce rubber stamps.
The printing office has about 100 employees.
25. Mukachevo Mining Office Garage and Repair Shops.
Formerly, the administrative offices of Shakhtostroy (Mines Construction)
and Shakhtoeksploatatsiya (Mines Development) were located on Ploshchad
Stalina in Mukachevo. However, in spring 1951,these offices were moved
to the site of the coal mines at Berezinka, a village southeast of
Mukachevo. These consist of several workshops and parking grounds and
about 100 persons are employed here.
26. Bus Garage
Buses used.in Mukachevo and on other local lines are parked fcr the night
in several partitioned buildings. There are also some motor repair shops
located here. About 100 to 150 persons work here.
27. Motor Transport Office,
The Motor Transport Office has 50 to 70 vehicles at its, disposal and rents
them to organizations. The office is located in a.three-story, dark-gray,
stuccoed-brick building on Podgorodskaya Ulitsa (Ukrainian: Pidgorodska).
In the courtyard here,, there are several garages and repair shops.
28. Mukacheyo Shoe Factory (Muka,chevskaya Obuvnaya Fabrika)
The Mukachevo Shoe Factory employs. about 300 workers. Admittance to the
factory is by pass. The director is a Hungarian named Fizeshiy (fnu), who
was an apprentice cobbler during the time of the Czechoslovakian Republic.
Fizeshiy is about 1.5 years of age; height, 170 to 175 cm; weight, about
170 kilos; curly black hair; black eyes. He has been a Communist since
1930. During the time of the Czechoslovakian Republic,the:re was. a little
narrow street called Brondov Dvor where the factory is now located. This
street was lined on both sides with small shops of various kinds. With the
coming of the Soviet regime,- the street was closed off and the factory was
built.
29. Transformer Station
The station is in a two-story,red,stuccoed-brick building which has a tile
roof. There are several transformers here which regulate the current
received from the power plant in Uzhgorod.
30. MB Barracks
One three-gtory building is located on the street,and there are other smaller
buildings in a courtyard in the rear. Stationed here are special detachments
of the MGB whose job it is to fight partisan units in the woods. These
troops are directly subordinate to the oblast MGB with headquarters in Uzhgorod.
31. Opera Theater
This is a large corner building, yellow in color, with a sheet-iron roof. It
seats about 2,500 to 3,000 persons.
32. Skala Movie:.Theater
This is a very large movie theater. The building is brick, painted a grayish-
white, and the structure has a cement roof.

33. Maintenance and Construction Office
The maintenance and Construction Office is in charge of repairing all
municipal buildings and supervises new construction. It is subordinate to
the City Directorate (Gorupravleniye). The Maintenance and Construction
Office employs about 2,000 workers. This installation consists of two
buildings, one of which was known as the Chizhmarnya during the time of
Czechoslovakian independence. It was a large market building for all the
cobblers of Mukachevo. It is dark-gray, stuccoed building with a tile
roof. The administrative office of the Maintenance and Construction Office
is located next door to this building.
34. Railroad Workers' Training School
This is a large,yellow-brick corner building, three stories high, with a tile
roof. This was the Gorozhanskaya (sic) Shkola during the time of the
Czechoslovakian Republic.
35. Army Club
Under the Czechoslovakian Republic, this building was occupied by Sokol, the
Czech sports organization. It is now used by Soviet Army officers. It is a
gray brick building with a roof of eternite , an asbestos-cement roofing
material.
36. Forest and Lumber Industry (Leskhoz i Lespromkhoz) Administration Buildings
The director of h s iv (fnu)~
This office in Mukachevo supervises all the forests in the
Mukachevo Rayon. The administrative offices are located in twojone-story,
yellow stone buildings in a courtyard. The buildings are about 30 to 4+0
meters long and 15 meters wide.
37. City Finance Department (Finotdel)
This is a three-story, gray, stuccoed-brick building. All the offices of the
Finance Department are located in this one building.

Pasport Office
This is a small, gray, two-story building with four or five rooms. New
pasporta are issued here. The office is staffed by a director and a few
other employees. Only persons who are arriving in Mukachevo to take up
permanent residence are registered at this office; the office does not
keep a register of other arrivals and departures. There are apartments
on the second floor of this building.
39. MVD Building
This is a large, three-story, corner bullding.of brick construction with a
tile roof. The following offices are located here:
a. City headquarters of the militia (gorodskoye otdeleniye militsii).
b. Rayon headquarters of the militia (rayonnoye otdeleniye militsii).
c. Operational section (operativnyy otdel) of the MGB.
d. Military register (voyennyy uchet), where arrivals and departures are recorded.
e. Passport section (pasportnoye otdeleniye), where arrivals and departures
are recorded.

40. Prison
In t .e courtyard adjoining the MTD building point 32there is a small
prison for the detention.of persons whose records area.-not yet in.order.
Also, prisoners are kept here pending their dispatch to the oblast prison
.in Uzhgorod.
41. Mukacheyo.ranch of the State.Bank
This is a two-story brick building, gray stucco, about 35 to 40 meters long
and 20 meters wide, with a tile roof.
42. Savings Bank
This is a three-story, yellow, stuccoed-brick building on Moskovskaya Ulitsa.
This bank handles the State Loan and saving deposits. It has about 50 to
60 employees. The upper two floors of this building contain apartments.
43. Post Office, Telephone, and Telegraph Offices.
This is a three-or four-story brick building with a tile :roof. it is 40
to jO meters long and 15 to 20 meters.wide. The telegraph office is
open 24 hours a. day.
44. Soviet Army O}ffieers'' Club
This is an attractive, three-story, corner building which was formerly occupied
by the Ukrainian Academy of Commerce (Torgovaya Akademiya). It is a brick
building with a tile roof. It is about 40 meters from the corner to each
end of the building.and the structure is about 20 meters wide. There is
a,large gymnasium in the courtyard.
45. MGB Building and the Land Office (Zemupravleniye)
This is a white, stuccoed-brick building with.a tile roof? The structure
is about 50 meters long and 20 meter's wit's.. The MGB occupies part of the
building and the Land OOffice the other part.
46. Knitting Mill (Trikotazhnaya Fabrika
This is a three-story, yellowish,brick building with a.til.e roof. The
structure is about 50 to 60 meters long and 30 meters wide:. About 300
to 400 employees work here.
47. Meat Combine
This installation was built in 1950-1951, There are several buildings.
One rather large building houses the administrative offices. There are
several well-equipped workshops, repair shops, and large garages belonging
toLthe combine.. All buildings are of brick and have tile roofs.
48. TobiLeco. Factory
This is a very large brick build.in which is not stuccoed. It is 100 to
130 meters long and 80 to 100 meters wide. The building has two stories and
a cement roof, It has large storage rooms. The factory is in operation
around the clock. It employs 700 to 800 wa~rlcers, Its main product is
Verkhovina curettes.
