On 20 February 1954, the best BM and NCOs of the 2nd infantry regiment wereaVarded
book p. es Subsequently dieft.ssions were held designed to induce those whose three-
5r.ear term of service terminated In late 1954 to re-enlist for anotAer three years.
Between early January and early March 1954, 70 new recruits arrived at the 2d infantry
regiment; most of these remuits came from -Thuringia. The regiment was assigned a,
vete, of 300 men to be newly recruited.
On 2 and 3 March 1954, a field exercise was held by the 2d infantry regiment about 15
ke west of rrenzlau in Zwerweliner Forst. About 1y200 men and all 11.e vehicles and
artillery pieces of the regiment took part. The infantry units mar3hed to the train-
in; area via Schoenermark and Arandsee. The objective of the exercise was to train
the regiment for defense and attack operations. Similar field exereises Were held lay
the 1st and 3rd infantry regiments. Between 8 and 11 March 1954, a sandetable exer-
eise was held for officers of the division headquarters, allegedly in preparation
for an expected exercise at division level, Between 24 and 27 Maze i, sech sand-table
eearcises were scheduled to be held by all the three infant'rf realm:Its of the divi-
sion. On 23 March, the 2d infantry regiment began advanced combat practice firing
with all weapons in the Jaegerbrueek area. 2
In mid-March 1954, the motorcycle company of the 2d infantry regiment received 37
new Soviet model M-72 sidecar motorcycles. 3
ftering the reported period, the morale of the KVP soldiers was rather poor. In parti-
ueLar, the shortage of fuel and the reduction of the daily potato rations from 19000
'ee 500 grams pee capita lied a detrimental effect on the mood of the soldiers.
Agunal. Information that the Soviets delivered a large number of new trucks and
sideaae motorcycles to the KVP il the last half year was transmitted previously.
