SUBJECT Weekly OB Summary DATE DISTR. I June 1954 25X1 A NO. OF PAGES 2 REQUIREMENT NO. RD THE SOURCE EVALUATIONS IN THIS REPORT ARE DEFINITIVE. 25X1X THE APPRAISAL OF CONTENT IS TENTATIVE. (FOR KEY SEE REVERSE) The following is a summary of Soviet and KVP military activities observed prior to 31 May 1954: A. Soviet Troop Movements and Exercises, 1. First GL}ards Mechanized Arm., On 15 May, units of the 8th Guards Mechanized Division at Grimma were found to be nearly -.omplete at their installations. This year, the units will supposedly rotate to Koenigsbrueck for practices. On 20 May., the summer camp northwest of Schmorkau was partly occupied by units of the 8th Guards Mechanized Division. On 17 May, a military ship- ment went from Schwepnitz to Grimma. On 20 May,, the signal communications school at Koenigsbrueck was lightly occupied; tanks were no longer observed there. According to two other sources;, a unit of the 11th Guards Tank Division was transferred to Dresden between 2 and 5 May. 2. Second Guards Mechannized A : On 18 and 19 May, 88 new six-wheeled armored personnel carriers, which had arrived in two shipments, were unloaded at Doeberitz by personnel of the 1st Mechanized Division. The same shipments had been observed when crossing the border from the USSR. Four shipments with artillery units of the 1st Mechanized Division,, going from Doeberitz to Jueterbog, included 15 x 122.mra'howitzers, 23 x 85-mm and 57-mm anti- tank guns, and 14 x 120-mm mortars. On 14 May, a shipment yith 40 guns, allegedly of 57-nun caliber, left Neustrelitz for Jueterbog. 3. Third Guards Mechanize: On 19 May, Waldlager Huetten in Letzling Heath was occupied to capacity by the 7th Guards Tank Division. On 11 May, Camp Forst Tauer at the Lieberose training grounds was occupied by 8,000 to 10,000 troops of the 9th Mechanized Division. 4. Fourth Guards Mechanized A,=: On 19 May, most units of the 6th Guards Mechanized Division and the 10th Guards Tank Division were still at their posts. x ARMY #x JNAVY X AIR L (Note: Washington Distribution Indicated By "X"; Field Distribution 8 ".) Third Shock Army: On 19 May, elements of the 207th Rifle Division were observed in a forest camp southeast of Jaevenitz in Letzling Heath, elements of the 19th Guards Mechanized Division in Forest Camp 3 at Born, and Army troops in Forest Camp 1 at Born. 6. Eighth Guards A:rmv: On 17 May, the Army artillery 'brigades were still at Altenburg; on 15 May, the 308th Artillery Brigade was still at Gera; on 24 May, the 67th Guards Mechanized Regiment of the 20th Guards Mechanized Division was still at Zeitz; and on 18 May, the 76th Artillery Brigade was .still at Merseburg. The bulk of the 57th Guards Rifle Division, including the engineer battalion, was observed at the Kindel troop training grounds on 17 May. The engineer training site west of Brambach near Dessau has been occupied since early in May by the 19th Guards Engineer Battalion of the Army and by the engineer battalion of the 20th Guards Mechanized Division, 25X1A B. KVP Developments: 1. On 12 May, the Anti-Aircraft Artillery Regiment at Kirchmoeser was transferred to Potsdam, presumably to be stationed in the Garde-du-Corps Kaserne. 2. Units continued training at their stations. 3. Several buildings have been completed in a new barracks installation south 2 5X1A -Billeting equipment arrived between 14 and 18 May.' y 25X1A 1. Many Soviet units transferred to training grounds were accompanied by officers' dependents who were quartered either in the summer camps or in nearby villages. 2. Between 10 and 16 May, four troop trains were dispatched from the Halle railroad district to Brest Litovsk, 25X1A 1. _j2oMMent: The guns probably were 76.2 mm pieces detached by the 9th Guards Tank Division. 25X1A L Comment: More combat troops have remained at their posts than in preceding years.
