(FOR KEY SEE REVERSE) Klaipeda which was the only ice-free Soviet port in the Baltic at that time. The ship entered the Winter Harbor by the northern channel on 18 February 1954 and it departed through the southern channel on 22 February 1954. The The berthing area lay parallel to the main line of the roadstead. The ship drew 16 feet fully loaded. there was a depth of 18 feet along 25X1 this polr. 3. There were three electric cranes available on the pier. The outer sections of the cranes ran on rails along the edge of the pier, and the inner sections ran along a cement ramp. The southern portion of the pier was damaged, probably from bombing. In addition to moving along the pier, the cranes had a lateral movement. Railway tracks, which were flush with the pier surface, ran underneath the overhead cranes. On the pier there were some iron structures which looked like crane parts. 4. The area marked North Ballast Quay on the J.I.B. sketch was only a stone dike and not a raised pier.- In this area there was an oil tank. 5. There were always ships loading coal at the South Ballast Quay. These ships were 25X1 handled very quickly. Two or three grabbers were used. There was no coal ti On the Dier-there was a small stock of coal which did not exceed 1,000 tons. 6. In the area of Sandkrug Harbor there was some building activity.) 25X1 There was a jetty which was not indicated 25X1 on the chart. Some small vessels were at this jetty,which appeared to be built of wood,but there did not appear to be much traffic between the betty and the city. STATE X ARMY I X NAVY AIR IX FBI AEC 7. The section which was marked Commune Bommels Vitte on the map was surrounded by a high wire fence. Military guards patrolled along the fence. 8. A short distance north of the lighthouse on the east side of the harbor entrance, here was a great deal of aircraft activity over the city.
