1. In late February 1954 a total of 117 families consisting of 422 persons moved
from Eangvon Province into the vicinity of Chuang-ni (N 37_58, H 125-01)
(%C-7702). According to the newcomers, the Kangwon Province Farmers Union
instructed them to leave the mountainous area and settle on the open plains.
2. Under the supervision of the Chejang-ni People's Committee, the local
populace provided housing, food, and fertilizer to the new inhabitants and
helped them on the farms. One individual with a small family was ordered to
house three nyv families. Each Chejang-ni family provided a monthly average of
one small mal of rice or other grains. The amount of land given the settlers
varied in accordance with the size of the family, averaging 2,000 to 2,500
P'yong.2 Each group of five families was loaned an ox to aid in plowing, and
the Ongjin-gun People's Committee provided grain seed on credit.
