The Szczecia (Stettin) Repair Shipyard is known as Gryfia and is situated on a small island in Szczecin harbor. About 300 workers are employed there and it works two eight-hour shifts per day. It has one dry dock, brought from Gdynia in August 1952, which is capable of lifting a ship of about 3,000 tons DW. The yard is employed on the repair of the following type of vessels: small training ships; coastal vessels of the DIANA and JULIA class, which are of steel construc- tion and 13 to 14 meters long; fishing cutters and trawlers; and small harbor craft. - 2. This shipyard is not being utilized to capacity and is in the process of being expanded in the near future. It will undertake the repair of more and larger vessels. 3. Szczecin (Stettin) Shipyard is situated on the west bank of the mainland, almost opposite the small island of Gryfia. This yard works three eight-hour shifts a day. In January 1953 six or seven freighters were under construction in this shipyard for the Soviet merchant marine. One of the ships was completed and had the hammer and sickle painted on its funnel, two had been launched but not fit- ted out, three or four were still on the ways. These vessels are about 100 meters long and about 3,500 tons DW; they have four cargo holds, one funnel and three masts with derricks. The bridge and funnel are situatedikidships and the vessels are of the three island type; they are diesel-powered. 4. The Shipyard is also engaged in the construction of small steel fishing cutters, approximately 25 meters long, for the Polish fishing company Arka. 5. In January 1954 dockyard workers and engineers were being moved from doc dE in Gdynia and Gdansk to the Szczecin dockyards. It is popularly believed in Poland that the reason for this is that there has been far too much sabotage in the Szczecin Shipyard.
