OF PAGES 1 REQUIREMENT NO. RD 25X1 REFERENCES THE SOURCE EVALUATIONS IN THIS REPORT ARE DEFINITIVE. THE APPRAISAL OF CONTENT IS TENTATIVE. (FOR KEY SEE REVERSE) 1, There has been considerable talk in Poland about building waterways to connect the East, i,e,, the Soviet Union, with the West, and more particularly, about building a canal which would connect the Bug river, more than half of which is under Soviet control, with the Vistula river, and thereafter to extend it so as to provide connection between the Vistula and the Notec (a stream); later, per- haps, the canal would be extended to connect with the Oder river. As of April 1954, little had been done in this direction due to the shortages of material. According to Source, a number of more pressing problems must be resolved before the canal can be built. 2. Source states that two hydroelectric basinsl are being built near Brest - one at Janow Podlaski (353,4458) and another at Drohiczyn (S53/G10); it is planned to build hydroelectric power stations at these two locations in anticipation of the above-mentioned canal, STATE % ARMY X NAVY X AIR X FBI AEC
