1. Alongside the Import Pier at Ventspils, on 2 to 3 April 1954, frozen meat was
discharged into trains of insulated cars for transport inland. These cars were
in poor condition; the ground could be seen through some of the floor boards.
2. The next train that arrived consisted of brand new refrigerator cars. These
had four wheeled trucks at each end, and each car had a self-contained diesel
refrigerating plant. One coach at the end of thetrain was living quarters for
the refrigerating engineers, who travelled with the train.
