1. In July 19531 a dredger working in the channel near
Chizhov Island. A' Dvi,na River pilot stated that the dredger works
continuously during the season to maintain the depth of the channel,
since the maximum draft at low water is 26 feet.

2. At Sa muill No. 2 on the south-sa.ltheastern tip of Brevennik Island the
depth at low water .was found to be 25 Zee-c, two ,deters off the yaay.
This quay, which is'known as-Quay 15, is about 1,000 feet long,
approximately eight feet. above water, and extends shoreward about 50
feet. It is a brushwood type quaywibh a surface of three layers of
plank. The. pit ro s.at uck from the timber yard to
the quay, awmill No. 2 in July 1953,
there was a shortage of labor at the quay. Only four gangs were avail-
able for each shift. Depending on the terms of the charter party,
gangs were moved from ship to ship to.avoid the necessity of payment
of demurrage.
I Ia floating' 4i ydock of medium size at the dock yard at
the southern end of Solombala Island. The dock contained a naval
trawler.
Two bridges connect Arkhangelsk with Solombala Island. The railway
bridge crosses Kuznechikha River via Shilov Island. Sidings and
freight trains were observed on both sides of the river, but no trains
were seen on the bridge. The second bridge, a wooden construction for
regular traffic, floats on pontoons. It is clearly posted at either
end for three-ton maximum loads and ten-kilometer maximum speed. About
400 yards northeast of the pontoon bridge are f9ur stone apparently
intended for the construction of a new bridge. o work
