Construction Projects, Shuman - May 1951
1. Since 1950, there have allegedly been plans for the construction of an industrial
enterprise in Shuman for the production of spare parts for oars, for typewriters,
etc. Informant did not know (sic) whether production had been started.
2. The construction of new residences for civilians has been proceeding rapidly in
Shumen, as in other parts of Bulgaria. Citizens needing homes request them from
special conmi.ssions consisting of one Judge (lawyer) and two counsels. The
commissions examine the condition of the family of each applicant its.ieconomic.' .
status, assign the homes, and fix the rent the persons shall pay.
48 leva per month for a home consisting of two rooms, a storeroom, and a corridor;
this payment included water charges.
3.- The power supply is sporadic and the intensity of lighting speak. Informant believves'
that the major part of the power supply is absorbed by the industrial establishments.
Polyclinic at Shuman - March 1951
4 A State polyclinic, fairly wall equipped, with one physician, one dentist (in-
formant)., one health officer, and one obstetrician is located in the Veselinovo
outskirts of Shuman. It has a maternity department with three beds. The technic].
equipment at the polyclinic (chairs, beds, etc.) bears the trademark "Zavod 13".
All dental care (extractions, ordinary fillings, etc.) are furnished to the r'esi-
dents free of charge. Only the raw materials necessary for dentures are purchased
by the patients. The supply of materials for dentures is obtained by the polyclinic
from the Public Health Section of the Okoliya Council,, which in turn is supplied by
the similar section of the 0krug Council. Every polyclinic has a small supply"of'
gold for capping teeth, which is supplied to the patients for a payment of 100-150-'
leva. It is forbidden for dentists to use their own gold or that of their patients.

6. Dentists are paid a gross salary of 54O leva per-month, from which is deducted 10
to 12 leva for insurance, unemployment, sickness, professional dues, etc.
Comment; "Zavod 13" is located in Kazanluk, and rior-to- orld War
engaged in the production and repair of airnlanas.
