In April 1951+, P'ut'ien (N 25-26, E 119-00)(Hunghus) was approached by a merchant vessel on a general northwesterly course passing about three, miles southwest of Chungloushan Island (approximately N 25-17, E 119-1~0), then west-northwest between Rugged Island (N 25-21, E 119-28) and Passage Island, which lies two miles to the south. A northwesterly course was taken for about 11+ miles into Hsinghuawan to the pilot station located about a mile north of Brothers Islands. From the pilot station, the ship followed a northwesterly course to the .channel that led to P'ut'ien, passing between two small islands located at N 25-22, E 119-11. At the entrance to the channel, the ship passed Pagoda Island, located on the south side of the channel. On the north side, the chailn+el was marked with stakes; one stake with a black ball on the top of it was across the channel on the north side of the entrance. The anchorage was five miles upstream from the channel entrance at Sanchiangk'ou (N 25-26, E 119-06). 2. The ship anchored with one anchor upstream and another downstream. The Chinese Communist pilot stated that the channel was deep enough for vessels drawing up to 21 feet; however, this ship drawing 1'j feet fully loaded waited for half-tide or higher before proceeding up the channel. No dredging operations were being conducted in the channel or the anchorage. 3. There were no wharfs or piers at P'ut'ien, and none were being constructed. Since there were no cranes or winches on sore, the ship used its own gear to load and unload cargoes from lighters. Uncut logs were usually floated out to the ship and picked up directly out of the water; cut tim- ber, however,. was taken aboard from lighters. 1+. There were no ship repair or construction facilities in the anchorage or channel. CONFIDENTrAL~CONTROL - U.S. OFFICIALS ONLY STATE x ARMY % NAVY g A1R g F81 AEC DATE DISTR. 23 July 1951+ 25X1 NO.
