SUBJECT Honam-ni Armed Self-Defense Unit, Hwanghae Province THE SOURCE EVALUATIONS IN THIS REPORT ARE DEFINITIVE. THE APPRAISAL OF CONTENT IS TENTATIVE. (FOR KEY SEE REVERSE) the headquarters of the Honam.ni (N 37.52, E 126-09) (BB5094) Armed Self-Defense Unit was at BS4994, in' a small, square, wooden building. North of this building was the Honam-ni branch of the Yonan-gun Police Station. The unit possessed four Japanese Type-99 rifles, one of which was kept at headquarters and one at each of the three sentry posts which were manned by one member of the unit and three members of the People's Self-Defense Unit. These posts were in Saengguri (864993), Chitangsu-ri (B85095), and Noch'on-ni (B85193), in small thatch-roofed buildings. A 24-hour watch was maintained. 2. The Honam-ni Armed Self-Defense Unit, formed 20 March 1953, was composed of hi. members, including the chief. While on duty, normally every three days, members wore on their left arm a band of white cloth three inches wide, with a half-inch red border,' In thee middle of the armband "The Honam-ni Armed Self-Defense Unit" was brush-written in black; the seal of the chief of the Honam-ni Police Station also appeared on the band. 3.
