The ship loaded pitprops at Sawmill No. 2, which is located on the
southwestern corner of Brevennik Island.(See Sketch No. 1,),
2. The quay at Sawmill No. 2 was approximately 1,200 feet in length, and there
was space for three medium-sized merchant ships to lie alongside -the quay
at the same time. There were no cranes on the quay, but electricity was
available. The quay itself was constructed of wood and was in fairly good
condition. It was constructed by entwining small logs together and piling
them on top of one another. Informant believed that the quay could not
support a load much in excess of 10 tons.

from the quayside the water was 26 feet deep.
4. The area of Sawmill No. 2 was approximately two and one-half miles in length
and one mile in width. At the northwest end of the area there were three
ramps for drawing up logs from the river; at the southeast end of the area
there were two ramps for the same purpose. The three ramps were approximately
200 yards apart, and the two ramps were about 150 yards apart. (See Sketch No. 2)
5. The logs were pulled out of the river by mechanical means and were drawn through
the mill. From the mill the logs moved along a conveyor, which was raised
about 20 feet above the ground. Women pulled the props to either side of the
moving band depending upon the length of the individual prop. The props were
then stacked in the neighboring area, and eventually they were taken to the 25X1
quayside by trucks.
