In late 1953, horizontal seismometers designed for geological research work were manufactured almost exclusively at the Geophysikalische Werkstaetten (geophysics laboratories), formerly Anstalt fuer die Entwicklung geophysikalischer Geraete (Installation for the Development of Geophysical Apparatus) in Brieselang. A large number of the seismometers were delivered to China. The equipment was in- stalled in mines or mounted on 3.5-ton Diesel trucks. The seismometers were fitted with 24 or 36 mirror-galvanometers tuned to different frequencies to be used for the various types of rock and soil. The results obtained were either indicated on a metal disc or registered photographically. 2. The sets to be mounted on motor vehicles were checked for their vibration resistance prior to being accepted by the Soviets. Most of the mobile seismometers were delivered to Leipzig. 3. The seismometers are said to have a range of 3,000 meters. It is planned to explore geologically the whole of East Germany by means of these seismometers. New deposits of hard coal have, allegedly. already been found with the help of these sets. L. At the 1953 Leipzig Fair, the USSR offered mobile seismometers for sale. These seis- mometers were identical with those manufactured at the Geophysikalische Werkstaetten. In 1953, the technical manager of this enterprise was engineer Noblitz (fnu) of Berlin- Charlottenbtrg. The enterprise had a work force of about 40 men. A building with 130 new work shops was under construction. STATE X ARMY X I NAVY X AIR X FBI AEC
