In connection with an "Education Day" celebrated throughout Poland, a so- called "Meeting between Reader and Librarian" was held in the Grabowek suburb of Gdynia. The purpose of this meeting was to encourage the people to make more use of the public libraries. 2. The meeting was well attended, mainly by workers sent there by the Basic Party Organizations in the various factories and places of work in Gdynia. Nevertheless, the proceedings lasted a very short time, as the atmosphere of the meeting deterior- ated to such an extent that the organizers were obliged to terminate it hastily, for fear of being beaten up. At the conclusion of the opening report by the Director of the Propaganda Section in the Municipal Committee of the PZPR (Polish United Workers, Party, individuals in the audience began to shout: "We don't want to hear about what you've done for us in the past. We want to know what you are going to do for us, as the ceilings in our lodgings are falling down and the rain is coming in dough the roofs. It is easy for directors to talk propaganda when their houses are warm and their bellies are full. We want food and good houses, and not books."
