PLACE ACQUIRED 1. On 5 September 1953 at Kronshtadtiat the position usually occupied by the OKTYABRSKAYA REVOLYUTSIYA,there was a cruiser at anchor'. It was said to be. one of the new cruisers. The second mast of this vessel was located forward of the second stack and it had two triple turrets of heavy guns forward and similar heavy armament aft It appeared to be o. the same class as the SVERDLOV. This vessel, or one of similar class,.wab in the same position on 16 September 1953. 2. On 5 September 1953 the following vessels were seen in the dockyard at Kronshtadt: This is UNEVALUATED REPORT DATE DISTR. 27 Aug-,tst 1951+ NO. OF PAGES 3 REQUIREMENT NO. RD REFERENCES THE SOURCE EVALUATIONS IN THIS REPORT ARE DEFINITIVE. THE APPRAISAL OF CONTENT IS TENTATIVE. (FOR KEY SEE REVERSE) a. A destroyer with two, stacks, a tripod foremast, and a short mast aft. Its armament was not seen. Ports of Kronshtadt and Leningrad A large number of small craft which were possibly MTBs or minesweepers. On 5 September one destroyer and two minesweepers were moored to the ouay of the small repair yard at the northern end of Kanonerskiy Island. (See attached sketch). The destroyer which had two tripod masts and three stacks appeared to belong to an old class. It was armed with four guns of the same caliber. One gun was mounted forward, two aft of the second mast, and;oue between the second mast and the third stack. It had two sets of triple torpedo tubes amidships. The minesweepers had one mast and one stack each. They had no guns mounted o~the foredeck. They appeared to be old German vessels. A new cruiser which informant believed was of the SVERDLOV Class was tied up at the position sho'wn'on attached sketch, in the Admiralty Shipbuilding Yard. (Admiralteyskiy Sudostr''oifelnyy Zayod), Two Urge floating cranes were Loored at the Admiralty Shipbuilding Yard as shown on attached sketch. Two transport vessels of between 4,000 and 6,000 tons each were moored in the vicinity of the Admiralty Shi.rbuilding Yard as shown on the attached sketch. They were painted gray, and they had one stack and two masts each. 7. No observations were made at the Kirov (ex-Putilov` Shipbuilding Yard. 8. .ro cruisers, the positions of which are shown in the attached sketch,. ``ire under construction in the Admiralty Shipbuilding Yard. Work was under- way on the superstructure and turrets of the cruiser on the northern side of the basin, and work had just started on the superstructure of the cruiser on the southern side of the basin. 9. On the night of 9/10 September a large submarine, considerably over 300 feet in length, was towed by three tugs out the Neva River into the Morskoy Canal. The conning tower appeared to be very high and there were raised platforms fore and aft. 10. On 16 September', three cruisers were observed in the vicinity of Kroxishtadt. One appeared to belong to the SVERDIOV Class and the other two seemed to be smaller.
