In 1953 the Institute was moved into a 5-story building in Boulevard.Georgi Dimitrov, at the corner of Tear SimeonbStreet. The Institute is under the Ministry of Heavy Lnaustry (ha.nisterstvo.,Na Teshkata Industriya)i which is located in a recently completed 5-story building in Graf Ignatiev Street. 2. The staff of the Institute consists of approximately 300 persona, including a large, proportion of specialists such as engineers, agroncmiete, geologists, chemists, and technicians. The staff is Bulgarian with the exception of possibly three Soviet specialists. Though the latter do not occupy official positions, they impress their mark on.the entire working of the Institute. 3. The research is carried out by sir,-,..a teams of experts operating in certain areas, mainly mountainous ones. Samples ofthe various substances encountered such as soil,'stones, minerals, ores., etc., are forwarded to the Institute for analysis. lt. The Institute has several laboratories, includings a. A modern abundantly-equipped chemical laboratory; b. A photographic workshop., nearly every stage of the work of the Institute being dependent on photography as a matter of routine; c. A galvano-technical laboratory for the charging of batteries which feed the instruments and appliances for field work., these latter including the latest devices of Soviet and German manufacture; and SECRET--U. A new X-ray installation for the examination of heavy matter, such as stones and ores. The Institute also has a workshop for precision mechanics, which makes and repairs h es . spare parts for its instruments, The equupment of the workshop incluC s three lat One of these is very small for the most delicate work processes, is rather old,, and is of German manufacture; the second is a medium lathe of modern Czechoslovakian make;-and the third is a large lathe of Bulgarian make. 6. Pett r Paunov .is the manager of the workshop for precision mechanics. He is a mechanical engineer titute Georei Paskov is the manager of the photographic laboratory and holds a special permit to take photographs throughout Bulgeria. 8.
