1. On 1 June 1954, it was learned that the organization of fighting groups
had been ding on for about 3 weeks in all industrial ei~
of
Kreis Zittau. Such fighting groups were set up-at the 07T ~aenomen
Works, the Zittau weaving mill, and the previous firm of Eernhardt, which
had been nationalized, The recruiting campaign for ;these fighting groups
primarily appealed to the members. of the SED end the FDJ, workers who had
shown their loyalty to the SED regime, former NCOs of the German armed
forces, and men above forty. Efforts were being made to recruit as many
men as possible above forty because they would not be inducted in the
event of mobilization.
2." The strength of these fighting groups will not usually exceed 10 percent
of the total labor force of the industrial enterprise concerned. Training
in firing with carbines and in the defense of factories will be given twice
a week. >?eapons furnished to these fighting groups have been stored in the
individual industrial enterprises in the Zittau area. Practice alarms are
scheduled to be held.
3. Members, of the fighting groups have been informed that they would be trained
as cadre personnel capable of providing leadership to the entire work force
of their enterprise in an emergency/" All candidates recruited for the

property""'. Most of the workers asked did not refuse to join the fighting
groups because they feared the consequences of a negative answer.
