A technical school for laboratory workers (Meditsinski "Tehnikum" Za L artti) 9 equivalent in grade to a secondary school., is located on the first floor of'`the building at Ulitsa Zhdanov 3 in Sofia. Between 1947 and 1951 the school had no set curriculum but gave yearly or half-yearly courses from time to time for graduates of secondary schools. Since 1951 there are regularly scheduled courses lasting two years., to which students of either sex who have completed nine grades or primary school are admitted. 2. In addition to a school certificate, students must submit a written life history, a birth certificate., a medical certificate., a statement regarding the financial condition of their parents, and a statement of character. The last two documents are made out by the Local Council of the place of domicile, the statement of character being given by the Cadre Department of the Local Council. Students must pass an entrance examination in Bulgarian literature. Beginning with the 1953-54 semester, pupils who obtained marks of not less than five or six in all subjects in primary school are admitted to this school without any entrance examination. 3. There are 36 hours per week of theoretical studies in the mornings and some practical studies in the afternoons. The curriculum consists of chemistry, biology, physiology, biochemistry, miiierobiology, analytical chemistry., practical lectures on laboratory work, and general subjects such as history, psychology, physics, literature, and Russian. There are two hours per week of theoretical studies of PVKhO (Protivov .zdush i~himicheska Otbrana) s? Defense against Chemical Attack by Aircraft) in the third half-year semester of the course. Approximately 100 students graduate from the 2-year course each-year. At present the school has approximately 200 students., about 85 per cent of whom are girls. SECRET--U. S.
