The Ursus tractor factory at Warsaw is as an example of the factories which are part of the war industry, but which are officially subordinate to, in this case, the Ministry of Agriculture and which are said to manufacture only, for example, tractors for agriculture. 2. The Ursus factory has been enlarged several times and now occupies an area measuring 1.5 by 1.8 kilometers. 3. Since the beginning of 1951, positions such as foremen (verkchef) and chief designer have been occupied by Soviet officers. Of the Polish engineers, several have pursued special studies in the Soviet Union for several years. The number of employees totals 14,000, working in three shifts. 4. The factory is organized into five departments, four of which will shortly carry out conveyor-belt production. 5. Production probably amounts to about 12,000 tractors per year. At the same. time, the following is also manufactured: a. Wheel bands (tracks) for T-34 tanks, as well as for an 80 to 90-ton tank (possibly the JS-3). Trial manufacture of tracks for a very light tank has been started and large-scale manufacture of similar tracks should begin during 1954. b. Spare parts bO motors. c. Arm-orfor tank engines (this is sent to a factor y in Silesia). d. Arinor (parts) for aircraft engines. Said to be manufactured of rubber, oil, and chromium manganese steel.
