At 0900 hours on 24 July 1954,1 (ship passed Sursari Island (N 60-05, E 27-00) while enroute to Leningrad. At 1030 hours Dobserved a ,destroyer which was heading out to sea. The destroyer turned at Sursari Island and,came up towards ship; it then turned again in the direction of 25X1 Sursari Island and then headed toward Kronshtadt at full speed. 2. At 1215 hours a patrol boat came alongside ship. It had a motorboat hull, a cabin with an o.on briage, a single and a spherical radar screen on an iron scaffold. The boat's armament consie3ted of one gun on each side aft of the bridge, one gun on the afterdeck, and twu box- 25X1 shaped objects under tarpaulins, on each side. of the stern frame. 3. At 1230 hours a naval vessel passed ship at slow speed. It had a 25X1 long slender hull, a flush deck, two stacks, a scarred stern (sic), and a tower which was round on top at the after edge of the bridge. The ship also .had a tripod mast just aft of the bridge and a slanted stack just aft of the 25X1 mast. there were torpedo tubes on the deck of the vessel. The ship's armament consisted of one. or more guns on both the fore- deck and the afterdeck. The ship's radar was in operation. 25X1 4. The ship had a modern hull, a 25X1 slanted bow, a cruiser stern frame, a high mast with a.crowts nest in the center of the foredeck, a midships superstructure, and a bridge which had an upper and lower deck. The ship also had a boat deck on which there were 25X1 davits, a stack just aft. of the bridge, and an.aftermast which had no cross yard. There were several ventilators and booms around the masts. did not observe any guns or radar equipment on the vessel. The ship had a straight hull, a breakwater on the foredeck, a bridge superstructure, and a single mast at the after end of the bridge. The equip- ment on the mast consisted of a radar screen, a crow's nest, and searchlights. The ship's armament consisted. of one gun and an antiaircraft gun mounted on a fire control tower on the foredeck, two guns on each side aft of the stack, and another gun farther aft. There was a large winch located in the center of the afterdeck. All of the guns and the winch were covered with tarpaulins. A box-shaped object was located on each side of the stern frame. The ship's lifeboats were in davits on the boat deck. The pilot house on the ship had an unusual shape; it had a cut-off front with large 45-degree corners, and all the bulkheads slanted inwards. The ship flew a green flag. 6. At 1615 hours) la naval vessel off Shepelev Island (N 59-59 E 29-07); at the time, the vessel did-mot appear to be.underway. it did not have a crow's new vessel. nest or searchlights on the mast. It was also flying a green flag. The ship came up `UNCO ship and followed the buoy at the lightship. There was e, naval vessel at the buoy. a SVERDLOV- Class cruiser The pilot said that it was a 7. The latter vessel had a long slender hull and one mast. 13. At 0500 hours on 26 July, a small naval vessel go out of:the river; this vcgsel was used as a patrol boat. The vessel lay low in the water, and it had a flush deck, a bridge structure with a single mast, a spherical radar screen at the top of the mast, and a low stack. Its armament consisted of ,one gun on the foredeck, one gun on each side of the stack, and two guns on the afterdeck.' 14. At 0530 hours an outbound submarine was observed. The sub- marine had twin antiaircraft guns mounted one above the other on the conning tower. The ship had a straight hull,.a tripod mast with a cross mast and a searchlight, and two slanted stacks. Its armament consisted of a twin mount gun on the foredeck, one gun between the forward stack and the torpedo tubes, one gun on each side of the after stack, a second' set of torpedo tubes, ?an antiaircraft gun on a platform which had a short mast, and one. gun on the afterdeck. 19. At 0530 hours on 27 July, an outbound vessel was observed. 25X1 The ship had eight guns on.deck;.three guns were located forward of the bridge, two on each side of the stack and one farther aft. The'ship also had a tripod mast with a crowts nest, a searchlight, and two radar. scanners. On the east slip of the shipyard, work had begun on the superstructure of.a ship. The fence which had been constructed on the west. slip was painted red; a ,fence was being built on the middle.slip also. the fences were being. built because of the workers who pass.t e slips on the river side. 23. the west and middle slips of the Baltic Shipyard were being lengthened slightly because a number of iron rings and some wooden boarding sticking up from the water. A section of an old floating dry- dock lay crosswise between the west and middle slips. The cruiser which has lain along the slip for some time was painted. 24. There were three tankers of about'12,000 to 15,000 tons each at the Marti.Ship- yard. Two of the tankers were tied up to buoys outside the shipyard and the third was,on the slipway. Work was in progress on all three tankers. On the two tankers at the buoys, the masts, stacks, and bridge of each vessel was in place. _.One of the tankers was painted gray. The superstructure of the tanker on the'slip was under construction. 25. 25X1 25X1 At 1300 hours. on 28 July while passing Kronshtadt, f l i l the ol ow ng nava vessels: a. At 14.00 hours vessel moored to a buoy near Leningrad Lightship. it had a spherical radar screen and green f ag. Vesse was moored to the same buoy. At the other buoy in the area of the lightship, a large naval vessel was a cruiser of the SVERDLOV Class. it had four radar screens 27. At 1425 hours ship passed naval, vessel same time another naval vessel was observed heading toward Leningrad; 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 28. Naval vessel was observed heading toward Leningrad, and at 1500 hours 25X1 vessel ship. The latter vessel had an antiaircraft 25X1 gun on the foredeck and a wheelhouse aft. On 28 July ship of unusual construction about 15 miles off Shepelev Island (N 59-592E 29-07). (See Sketch No. 1,) This vessel was accompanied by a tugboat and another ship. 25X1 29. a cruiser engaged in target practice. The target was being towed by a destroyer The firing took place far out to sea. There were seven or e g seconds between each round, and there'were 12 or 14 shots in a series. However, none of the hits could be seen. The OKTYABRSKAYA RE\IOLYUTSIYA was observed in the same area. 30. At 0600 hours on 29 July,l la destroyer heading in an east- erly direction `..- the vicinity of Kokskaer. At 0700 hours a cruiser of the SVERDLOV Class was observed heading eastward in the vicinity of Paldiski. At 1045 hours two cruisers -)f the SVERDLOV Class and a destroyer were observed. the fore dec.[-., a bridge structure, a tripod mast, two slanted stacks, a small mast, a gun position, and one gun on the afterdeck. The three ships were traveling on different courses in a southeasterly direction. LComment; It is not clear whether the four destroyers were'different from each other or a ey were all the same type but that.destroyer was a different type.
